Wasim Mir OBE
Biography
Wasim Mir took up his post as Deputy Head of Mission in Brazil in June 2014. Since January 2017 he acts as a Chargé d’Affaires till the new British Ambassador to Brazil presents credentials. Wasim joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1998 and has spent most of his career focusing on multilateral issues and institutional reform.
Between 2012 and 2013 Wasim was Deputy Director in the FCO responsible for introducing a new flexible way of operating in the FCO through the establishment of the Projects Task Force. In recognition of his contribution to organisational reform and diversity, in 2012 Her Majesty The Queen awarded him the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Between 2011 and 2012 Wasim was seconded to the United Nations Secretariat where he worked was the senior advisor to the President of the United Nations General Assembly where he led a cross-cutting UN team to bring together Governments from across the globe and set the global agenda for tackling HIV. He also advised the President of the General Assembly on Peacekeeping Finance, Humanitarian Affairs, Cultural Dialogue and UN Reform.
Between 2006 and 2010 he worked at the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations heading a team responsible for Management Reform and Finance. He worked at the UK Representation to the European Union from 1999 - 2001 and again in 2005-06 during the UK Presidency of the EU. He has also worked in the FCO in London on United Nations issue, as Secretary to the FCO Board and Head of Internal Communications. Prior to joining the FCO, Wasim worked for the European Commission and the UK Department for Education and Employment.
Wasim studied economics at the London School of Economics, graduating in 1993. He subsequently obtained a Master’s Degree in Law from the University of Manchester, graduating in 1994. While working in Brussels, Wasim undertook an executive Masters in Business Administration from the University of Leuven, specialising in Public Sector Reform.
Wasim was born and brought up in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
