Academy conversion grant for local authorities: how to apply

Published 27 January 2017

Applies to England

This grant is for local authorities who need extra funding to help schools in their area convert to academies more quickly.

Regional schools commissioners (RSCs) award this grant. They will prioritise applications that meet the assessment criteria. Contact your RSC office to find out more.

You can only apply for this grant if you’re a local authority actively working on helping schools in your area convert to academies.

Successful awards will typically be between £35,000 and £65,000. If RSCs feel the applicant has made a very strong case, the grant could be higher.

Assessment criteria

When assessing your application, RSCs will consider:

  • how many academies or free schools you expect to convert in the next 12 months
  • how much resource your local authority dedicates to academy conversion
  • how you plan on spending the grant money

Apply for the grant

The deadline for applying is 10 February 2017.

To apply, complete the application form and email it to the ‘local authority conversion grant’ mailbox by the deadline.

If you have not already discussed your application with your RSC, we encourage you to contact your RSC office for more advice.
