Working closely with system partners, the government has implemented vital measures to tackle the significant local audit backlog it inherited.
The introduction of statutory backstops for the publication of audited accounts is a core element of these measures. To help clear the backlog, the first backstop of 13 December 2024 required local bodies to work with their auditors to publish outstanding audited accounts by this date for financial years up to and including 2022 to 2023.
