AAIB Field Investigations

A field investigation is an independent investigation in which AAIB investigators collect, record and analyse evidence.

The process may include, attending the scene of the accident or serious incident; interviewing witnesses; reviewing documents, procedures and practices; examining aircraft wreckage or components; and analysing recorded data.

The investigation, which can take a number of months to complete, will conclude with a published report.

• Boeing 737-35B (LY-SKA); runway excursion after landing; Birmingham International Airport; 21 September 2012

• Fan Jet Falcon 20E (G-FRAI), runway overrun after aborted takeoff, Runway 23, Durham Tees Valley Airport, 9 August 2012

AAIB Correspondence Investigations

These are reports on accidents and incidents which were not subject to a Field Investigation.

They are wholly, or largely, based on information provided by the aircraft commander in an Aircraft Accident Report Form (AARF) and in some cases additional information from other sources.

The accuracy of the information provided cannot be assured.

• Britten-Norman BN2B-20 Islander (G-SICA), runway excursion during rejected takeoff on icy surface at Lerwick/Tingwall Airport, on 16 January 2013

General Aviation

• Extra EA 300/L (G-ZXCL), canopy opened on takeoff and landed back on at Sywell Aerodrome on 7 February 2013

• Pioneer 300 (G-EKIM), bounced landing and nose landing gear collapse at Chiltern Park on 4 March 2013

• Piper PA-22-150 (G-ARHN), aircraft struck trees during go-around, Popham Airfield, 15 September 2012

• Piper PA-28-140 (G-AVGI), engine failure after takeoff from Liverpool John Lennon Airport on 15 February 2013

Sport Aviation / Balloons

• Edge XT912-B/Streak III-B (G-XTEE), loss of control following failure to become airborne, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, 17 March 2013

• Thruster T600N 450 (G-KYLE), propeller detached and forced landing near Killinchy, County Down on 15 February 2013

• Zenair CH 601UL (G-CBAP), canopy detached and forced landing, near Cumnock on 17 February 2013
