Quality assurance statement
Updated 8 February 2024
Applies to England
Introduction
The UK Statistics Authority’s Code of Practice for Statistics has 3 pillars: trustworthiness, quality and value. Within Quality, there are 3 subsections, of which Assured Quality is regarded as a key process. Producers of Official Statistics should be clear about the quality assurance processes that are applied throughout all stages of the preparation of statistics.
Quality assurance of population input data
Office for National Statistics population estimates are used for the calculation of tooth extraction episode rates. This data is used to verify the population figures used in this analysis.
Quality assurance of hospital input data
Data queries used to extract tooth extraction activity from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database are reviewed by analysts external to the Dental Public Health team. The England figures are compared to externally published figures published by NHS Digital and the NHS Outcomes Framework
Quality assurance of calculations and estimates
There is a Central Statistics team within the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). All derived calculations and estimates used in this tooth extraction analysis are reviewed by this Central Statistics team. They also assess whether the published data tables are accessible to all users.
Quality assurance of report findings and interpretation of results
This section of the analysis is reviewed by the Dental Public Health Senior Management Team who are based in the DHSC Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID). Care is taken to minimise the number of people who have access to this analysis due to the badging of this work as Official Statistics.
