The Committee’s purpose is to examine areas of concern about the standards of conduct of public office holders, advise the Prime Minister accordingly, and to promote the highest standards of conduct across public life.
In this report, we describe the work we have carried our in our priority areas over the past year.
The majority of the Committee’s time and work during the period of this Annual Report has been focused on two major reviews. In June 2021, we published a report on election finance, looking at the regulation and enforcement of donations and campaign expenditure by candidates, political parties and non-party campaigners in election campaigns.
In September 2020, we started a review looking at the strengths and weaknesses of the standards landscape – Standards Matter 2.We published findings from that review in June 2021. These findings will inform our final report and recommendations to the Prime Minister which is due towards the end of the year.
We have also monitored the impact of Covid-19 on public standards over the past year, looking at standards issues arising as a result of the pandemic; and have followed up previous reviews on intimidation in public life and local government ethical standards.
