Our approach to sustainability starts with our goal to do our work at Sellafield safely and to keep the site and its nuclear materials secure - we continue to put safety, security and the environment first.
One of the ways that we are making Sellafield more safe and secure is by removing nuclear risks and hazards, including those posed by our oldest waste storage facilities.
Some of our metrics tell a very positive story, for example, we have had no significant nuclear Site Incident Reports for the last two years. However, our performance against other safety metrics fell short of the stretching targets that we set ourselves for last year.
We are committed to continually assessing our safety performance and identifying areas for improvement.
This commitment to safety was most recently demonstrated when we asked everyone involved in our work at Sellafield to pause what they were doing and to talk about safety and the environment and identify ways in which we can continually improve our performance. Read more about our recent safety pause.
Beyond the site fence, our commitment to sustainability stretches into the communities in which we operate.
Our report for 2018/19 includes a summary of our social impact objectives and the strategic investments that we, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, local authorities and others have made to help tackle the root cause of some of the issues that people in our communities are facing.
