How to apply to extend a caveat on a grant of representation

Who can apply
You can apply to extend your stop on a probate application (also known as a caveat) if you’re:
- over 18
- the person who entered the original caveat
- a probate practitioner appointed by the person who entered the original caveat
Fee
It costs £3 to extend an application for 6 months.
How to apply
If you’re the person who entered the original caveat, you must apply by post.
If you’re a probate practitioner, you can apply by post or email.
You can only apply if the original caveat is due to expire within a month.
Apply by post
- Download the form.
- Fill in all the sections.
- Print the form.
- Sign and date the form.
- Pay the £3 application fee by sending a cheque payable to ‘HM Courts and Tribunals Service’ with your form.
- Send the completed form to:

Apply by email as a probate practitioner
- Download the form.

- Sign and date the form.
- Pay the £3 application fee using Payment by Account.
