The first ASEAN-UK Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) took place in Phnom Phenh, Cambodia on 4 August 2022. UK Minister for Asia Amanda Milling represented the UK as a Dialogue Partner of ASEAN.
The meeting agreed the first plan of action between ASEAN and the UK. This outlines UK and ASEAN shared priorities across political, security, economic and global issues over the next 5 years.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded in 1967. It is a group of 10 countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The UK’s Dialogue Partner status was formalised in August 2021, the first dialogue partner ASEAN has included in 25 years. This is an important part of the UK’s tilt towards the Indo-Pacific, which is described in the 2021 Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy.
