Have you got what it takes to support a council’s recovery?

Councils are at the heart of our democracy, supporting local communities and delivering essential services. We know that some are struggling, and we’re doing all that we can to protect them. We want to take a collaborative and a constructive approach to reset our relationship with local government and rebuild its foundations. We will work with every council that needs it to put in place clear, deliverable plans to address issues and protect local taxpayers.

That means working directly with a small number of councils in difficulty to provide support, advice, challenge and expertise so they can recover, meet their statutory responsibilities and deliver the services their communities deserve. We expect the highest standards of local government – with central government playing its part as a responsible steward. Local councils must be fit, legal and decent.

The Deputy Prime Minister can make appointments under the Local Government Act 1999, calling on experts and those with a proven track record of collaboration and service delivery in challenging circumstances to help councils in their recovery.

We want to hear from you if you think you can help and have what it takes to work with local elected members and officers and the local community, within the statutory framework provided by government, to help councils reform and recover to meet the required standards of Best Value.

We welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and professions who can bring different experiences and perspectives to the role. We are determined to improve the diversity of appointments, so they are representative of the communities they are supporting.

If you have experience in public service delivery, local government, corporate governance, financial management (especially the fiduciary duties of local government finance), commercial enterprises, housing, service transformation and risk management, we want to hear from you.

If you are an experienced leader able to lead organisations through periods of uncertainty, able to bring diverse and competing interests together to deliver programmes of recovery and change, we want to hear from you.

I can honestly say it has been one of the best, and at times most challenging, roles of my career. As a Commissioner you get to both feel the personal fulfilment of helping an organisation improve, and simultaneously stretch and grow yourself at pace.
