British Sugar plc: application made to abstract water

British Sugar plc has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is to vary licence serial number 6/33/37/*G/0208, which authorises water abstraction from underground strata comprising Chalk at Bury St Edmunds at National Grid References TL 86130 65580 and TL 86260 65390, for industrial sugar manufacture purposes.
The variation applied for is to extend the higher abstraction rate, which is currently licensed from September to February (inclusive) and for a period of three calendar days in March, to include the entire month of March. No other changes to the licence are being proposed as part of this variation.
The existing abstraction rates are as follows:
- 300 cubic metres an hour
- 4,500 cubic metres a day
- 814,500 cubic metres a year.
