Background

The Department for Communities and Local Government invitied applications in November 2013 from bodies wishing to operate third party certification schemes for electrical installations in dwellings under the Building Regulations 2010.

Changes to the building regulations were announced on 18 December 2012 following an extensive consultation exercise. The Building &c (Amendment) Regulations 2014, were laid on 13 March 2014 and will come into force on 6 April 2014.

These regulations introduce third party certification as an alternative route to demonstrating compliance with Part P of the building regulations (electrical safety in dwellings). Reference to this is included in the revised version of Approved Document P (see page 9) which provides statutory guidance on how to comply with this part of the regulations. The revised version came into force on 6 April 2013.
