Details of the application

Canary Wharf Contractors Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is to vary licence serial number TH/039/0039/150, which authorises water abstraction from underground strata comprising the River Terrace Deposits from eight dewatering wells at Wood Wharf, London for the purpose of transferring it without intervening use to the dock at Wood Wharf, Harbour Quay at National Grid Reference TQ 38260 79930.

The variation applied for is to increase the licensed abstraction quantities to:

  • 126 cubic metres an hour (currently 45 cubic metres)

  • 1,103,760 cubic metres a year (currently 394,200 cubic metres)

The applicant has decommissioned three out of the eight dewatering wells. However, as part of this variation, the applicant has drilled a new dewatering well to replace one of the decommissioned wells, bringing the total number of active dewatering wells to six.
