This note gives guidance on classifying material known or suspected to contain avian influenza virus (bird flu).

Classification depends on the type of specimen being transported.

Category A includes certain animal samples known or suspected to have been infected with the A(H5N1) avian influenza virus.

Category B includes certain human samples known or suspected to contain the A(H5N1) subtype, or certain samples known or suspected to contain any other subtype of avian influenza virus 4.
