At Autumn Statement 2023, the Chancellor announced that he is commissioning the National Infrastructure Commission to undertake a study into connected and autonomous vehicles and mobility.

The study focuses on the policy interventions needed to ensure connected, autonomous, and self-driving technologies deliver economic growth across the UK.

The NIC would make recommendations on what’s required to enable the country to pursue a pathway towards wider-spread adoption of CAV technology and realise the potential benefits, considering the uncertainty about technological development, the role of both physical and digital infrastructure, and network management. The study should provide a final report in around twelve months, with an interim report due to be published in the summer of 2024.
