New and improved guidance for trustees
This financial year we have updated several pieces of guidance for trustees, making them easier to read, understand and to put into practice. We have prioritised areas of governance that are relevant to all trustees and all charities. We want to help trustees improve their knowledge, and in turn the governance of their charities. We are here to support trustees to get things right.
Read our recently updated guidance on trustee decision making, improving your charity’s finances and how to conduct meetings.

Check your knowledge – take our new quiz
Following the success of last year’s trustee quiz, this month we have launched our new and updated quiz. It contains a new set of questions, enabling trustees to test their knowledge against a range of important governance topics.
Doing the quiz is a quick and easy way of helping you as a trustee to find out where you may need to improve your knowledge. The Commission provides guidance on all the topics covered, with some that come with short 5-minute versions and videos.
See how you score and compare your scores with your fellow trustees!

Filing your annual return
Registered charities in England or Wales must send an annual return to the Charity Commission or report their income and spending every year.
You must submit your annual return within 10 months of the end of your financial year.
For example, if your financial year end was 31 December 2023 your deadline is 31 October this year.
