This guidance provides information and outlines the oral exam syllabus for Merchant Navy Chief Mates (Unlimited Tonnage, Near Coastal, STCW II/2) (Previously known as Deck Syllabus F), leading to the issue of a UK Certificate of Competency.

Candidates should demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge outlined in this oral examination syllabus and Deck oral examination syllabuses for Officer of the Watch Unlimited and Master Near Coastal <500 GT (Previously known as Deck Syllabuses C and D), by the appropriate response, anticipations and reactions to a range of routine, non-routine and contingency scenarios as presented by the examiner, from the perspective of a Chief Mate – More than 3000 GT Near Coastal (STCW II/2).

This is guidance to all Owners, Masters, Officers, Ratings and those concerned with maritime training. This guidance should be read with with MSN 1856 - Amendment 1,  MIN 690 - Amendment 1 and replaces the syllabuses published on UK seafarer careers: Training provision, information and examination syllabuses. This replacement has been made for formatting and accessibility purposes only, no content has been amended during this move.
