Child vision screening: learning assessment flowchart

Published 24 October 2017

Applies to England

This flowchart shows the progression route for trainee child vision screeners. A text-only explanation of the flowchart is also provided (below) for both face to face training and online training.

Face to face training pathway

Step 1: the local induction process is started at appointment. The trainee then undertakes:

  1. A teaching session on the specifics of the local pathway.
  2. Observation of the Keeler Crowded logMAR test plus practice in a safe environment.
  3. Real-time supervised practice, including formative assessment and feedback.

Step 2: the trainee undertakes summative assessment of practice and feedback. If they:

  • pass, they are signed off - note that there should be periodic review of their performance and competence, plus ongoing continuing professional development (CPD)
  • fail, they are referred to undertake further practice with support

Step 3: trainees that have undertaken further practice with support have a second summative assessment of practice and feedback. If they:

  • pass, they are signed off - note that there should be periodic review of their performance and competence, plus ongoing CPD
  • fail, they are deemed to have failed the training and their suitability for the role should be reviewed

Online training pathway

Step 1: the local induction process is started at appointment. The trainee then completes a generic e-learning package or equivalent.

Step 2: trainees complete an online assessment of their knowledge. If they:

  • pass, they are signed off - note that there should be periodic review of their performance and competence, plus ongoing CPD
  • fail, they are referred to repeat the learning package with additional support

Step 3: trainees that have repeated the learning package with support then repeat the online assessment of knowledge. If they:

  • pass, they are signed off - note that there should be periodic review of their performance and competence, plus ongoing continuing professional development (CPD)
  • fail, they are deemed to have failed the training and their suitability for the role should be reviewed
