Your organisation’s commitments to achieve the rights of people with disabilities in developing countries

A. Commitments to eliminate Stigma and Discrimination:

Chance for Childhood will, together with Rwandan partners such as RNUD, UWEZO and Empowering Children with Disabilities (EmCD) continue to document the barriers to participation faced by children and young people with Communication Disabilities, and ensure they are adequately represented in Disability Groups, both at national and district levels, in turn increasing opportunities to have their voices heard and demand inclusion .

By 2020, Chance for Childhood will work with our Rwandan partners to set up and strengthen local young people led disability groups which represent the rights of children and young people living with communication disabilities, ensuring their voices are listened to and that appropriate channels are known and effective for them to demand inclusion and meaningful participation in all aspects of community life.

B. Commitments for Inclusive Education:

Chance for Childhood commits to continue supporting, and roll out, training in disability awareness, identification of special learning needs and inclusive teaching methodologies as well as learning support assistance in Kenya, Ghana and Rwanda, ensuring children with disabilities are supported to complete a full cycle of quality, inclusive education in SDG 4 targets 4.1 and 4.2

Timeframe and/or implementation plan (75 words limit)

By 2020, Chance for Childhood will train Early Childhood staff from 20 service providers across Rwanda in collaboration with UNICEF Rwanda, in the early identification of special learning needs and inclusive teaching methodology for children aged 0 to 5. In Kenya, CfC will work with the Kenyan Institute for Curriculum Development to repackage the upcoming competency-based curriculum for previously out-of-school children, alongside the development of inclusive toolkits, ensuring Inclusive Education support nationally.

C. Commitments for Technology and Innovation:

Chance for Childhood will commit additional resources to the financing of innovating and supporting technological solutions benefiting children and young people with disabilities through the set-up of a Challenge Fund, providing seed funding to promising ideas and social entrepreneurs in order to establish a proof of concept and secure further investments to scale.

Timeframe and/or implementation plan (75 words limit)

In 2018 and 2019, Chance for Childhood will launch a series of rounds to invite applications from NGOs, social entrepreneurs or individuals showcasing potential game-changing ideas that could benefit children and young people with disabilities. Chance for Childhood’s Challenge Fund will launch with an initial budget of around £100,000.

D. Commitments for Women and Girls with Disabilities:

Chance for Childhood, through supporting Rwanda and Ugandan partners such as RNUD, UNABU and NUWODU, is committed to realise access to justice for girls and women with disabilities victims of discrimination and violence, through contributing evidence on the nature and prevalence of abuse, and building the capacity of frontline workers, to protect and safeguard them at all times.

Timeframe and/or implementation plan (75 words limit)

In 2019 and 2020, Chance for Childhood will work with the Rwandan National Police, and the Justice Sector in Uganda, to improve the reporting of incidences of abuse against girls with disabilities, in particular with communication disabilities, ensure accessible and inclusive reporting channels and adequate assistance to ensure their full and equal participation throughout judicial processes.
