3.1 A. Commitments to eliminate Stigma and Discrimination

We will work in partnership with the Ayesha Bashir Trust in Pakistan, funded by UK AID Direct, we to ensure Deaf children and young people reduce their risk and vulnerability to negative stereotypes, attitudes and behaviours
Timeframe and/or implementation plan (75 words limit)
By December 2020, we will have placed 2000 Deaf infants, children and young people on individual care pathways, which maximise their residual hearing and will enable them to develop communication skills with which to self-advocate and self-represent.

We will work with the British Council and the European Union to ensure that teachers for the Deaf in protect and safeguard the Deaf children in their care, reducing their risk and vulnerability to abuse.

By September 2019, we will have trained 360 teachers for the Deaf in Iraq who will utilise child protection methodologies to ensure Deaf children are safe and are able to access, quality, bilingual Deaf education

In partnership with Islamic Relief Worldwide and Every1Mobile, we will ensure Deaf children in low resource and complex humanitarian settings are able to access safeguarding messaging through digital messagingClick or tap here to enter text.

By September 2020 we will have devised and tested a digital model of intervention for cascade across the wider Islamic Relief Worldwide geography. Utilising appropriate digital technologies for conveying messaging that allows Deaf children to live safely and without fear of abuse.

In partnership with Laureus Sport for Good, we will work to ensure Deaf girls and young women in Jamaica reduce their risk and vulnerability to Gender Based Violence

By September 2020 we will have trained and deployed 30 Deaf female coaches who will work to reduce the susceptibility of 960 Deaf girls to Gender Based Violence, utilising safe practice messaging articulated through the medium of dance and martial arts activities

With Save the Children UK and Islamic Relief World Wide, we will work to ensure Deaf children and young people in complex humanitarian settings are able to access protection, communication, health and educational services in the communication mode of choice.

By Sept 2019 we will have devised and published a set of recommendations for use in complex humanitarian settings; to ensure agencies like the Save the Children UK and Islamic Relief Worldwide are able to respond to the distinct communication, linquistic and cultural needs of a hard to reach group. From 2019 onwards, we will cascade these recommendations through the Start Network, monitoring adoption and adherence to best practice.

With a range of NGO partners we will work to ensure all institutionalised Deaf children, and those at risk, are afforded family based care within an appropriate communication setting; this being part of a drive to eliminate the institutionalisation of children globally. We share the UK Government’s pledge to enable all children to have the opportunity to realise their right to family care.
