Reasons you may not get through ePassport gates (eGates)
Updated 7 August 2024
The self-service eGates allow eligible biometric passport holders to clear border controls quickly and efficiently. Most people will pass through without encountering an issue. However, some will be referred to an officer. These are the most common reasons for this.
Border security
Border Force officers may need to:
- verify your travel documents
- establish your nationality or identity
- check you’re permitted to enter the UK
eGate error
There may be technical issues with an eGate, which mean you will not be allowed to exit the eGate.
Identification error
Your physical appearance may have changed from your passport photo, or you may not have:
- looked directly into the screen until it turned green
- removed your hat, headphones, face mask or glasses
Passport or microchip error
All biometric ePassports contain a microchip, which can be damaged if not handled correctly.
Your passport may be damaged or worn so the eGate cannot read the microchip or the identification page.
Safeguarding
Border Force officers may need to establish a relationship between children and the adults with whom they are travelling.
This is to safeguard the welfare of children entering the UK and to prevent neglect, abuse, or exploitation.
User error
You may not hold a biometric passport, or you may not have:
- removed the passport from a protective cover
- opened the correct page
- inserted it fully
- pressed down firmly
There may be times when extra checks are required to ensure the security and integrity of the UK border is maintained. Officers are unable to comment on the specific nature for your referral. Your co-operation is appreciated.
