Interministerial Group for Transport Matters Communiqué: 9 December 2021

The Interministerial Group for Transport met on 9 December 2021 by video conference. The meeting was chaired by Baroness Vere of Norbiton, Minister for Devolution.

The attending ministers were from the:

  • UK Government: Baroness Vere of Norbiton
  • Northern Ireland Executive: Nichola Mallon MLA, Minister for Infrastructure
  • Scottish Government: Graeme Dey MSP, Minister for Transport
  • Welsh Government: Lee Waters MS, Deputy Minister for Climate Change

The chair welcomed all attendees to the meeting.

The discussions focused on the matters surrounding the availability of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers.

Baroness Vere detailed the actions government has taken to address the issues and all ministers discussed how the situation was affecting their respective jurisdictions.

The discussions covered topics including:

  • the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) on the HGV industry
  • driver training and testing
  • lorry parking facilities
  • attracting new entrants to the sector
  • engagement with the haulage industry

Ministers agreed to continue sharing information and ideas and to seek opportunities to collaborate to develop solutions and ensure consistency of approach.
