This report examines the importance of standards in computer-based trading. It reviews published literature on the role of standards in the real economy as well as existing standardization initiatives in computer-based trading. Finally, it makes recommendations where standards could play a larger part in financial services and help to deliver greater transparency, greater trust, easier policing and lower costs.

This review was commissioned as part of the Foresight project on the future of computer trading.
