Providing support to British nationals abroad, including during periods of crisis, is a vital public service. It is one of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s top priorities.

The strategy sets the direction for the UK government’s consular and overseas crisis work under 4 strands:

  • 24/7 services: we will be available to British nationals who need our help at any time of day or night
  • assistance: we will provide empathetic assistance to British nationals abroad that is relevant to their circumstances
  • prevention: we will help British nationals to stay safer when they are abroad
  • crisis: we will maintain our world leading crisis response capability to support British nationals after major incidents abroad

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office takes responsibility for putting the strategy into action. We will work with partners across government, local authorities overseas, the private sector and other stakeholder groups to support British nationals when they live and travel abroad.
