During the World Climate Action Summit of COP28, the United States and United Kingdom reinforced their support for the Green Shipping Challenge.
This builds on the Clydebank Declaration of COP26, which intends to help propel the shipping sector towards a zero-emission future and align with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature increase rise to 1.5°C.
At last year’s Green Shipping Challenge, we launched the US to UK Green Shipping Corridor Task Force with the aim of establishing green shipping corridors between our countries.
Since then, we have successfully held workshops in both Washington, DC and London with representatives from the United States and United Kingdom maritime sectors.
In addition, there was significant interest expressed by stakeholders through the recent joint US and UK survey run by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy of the US Department of Energy and Innovate UK KTN on developing these corridors. We intend to continue robust stakeholder engagement and build on this enthusiasm.
As part of our collaboration, we will now focus on building a bilateral consortium to progress the establishment of a green shipping corridor between the United States and United Kingdom, and we see opportunities to engage a broad range of stakeholders in this effort.
Concurrently, we intend to undertake a feasibility study to help identify the most effective and viable maritime routes to establish a green shipping corridor between our 2 countries. That is, maritime routes between the United States and United Kingdom that can showcase the early adoption of zero-emission fuels and technologies to place the shipping sector on a pathway to align with the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C. This feasibility study will accelerate the development of green corridors between the United States and United Kingdom.
