This revised CHIS code of practice provides guidance on authorisations for the use or conduct of covert human intelligence sources (“CHIS”) by public authorities under Section 29 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (“the 2000 Act”), and on Criminal Conduct Authorisations under Section 29B of the 2000 Act.
The revised CHIS code also provides guidance on the handling of any information obtained by authorisation of a CHIS. This code is issued pursuant to Section 71 of the 2000 Act, which provides that the Secretary of State shall issue one or more codes of practice in relation to the exercise and performance of the powers and duties in Part II of the 2000 Act. This document was produced following a public consultation.
