The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from Suez Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd.

Regulated facility type

This is a new Bespoke application for the operation of an Anaerobic Digestion plant which will provide treatment of organic food wastes. The process will generate biogas which will be processed by a 1.2MWth CHP engine to generate heat and electricity that will be mainly used by the AD plant, the excess biogas will be processed by a biogas upgrading plant to meet the National Grid standard and exported to the National Grid.

The AD activity falls under the Schedule 1 Activity [Section 5.4 A(1)(b)(i) of the EPR 2016 - Recovery or a mix of recovery and disposal of non-hazardous waste with a capacity exceeding 75 tonnes per day (or 100 tonnes per day if the only waste treatment activity is anaerobic digestion) involving biological treatment.]

In addition the site will operate a waste water treatment activity which falls under Schedule 1 Activity Section 5.4 A(1)(a)(ii) - Disposal of non-hazardous waste with a capacity exceeding 50 tonnes per day (or 100 tonnes per day if the only waste treatment activity is anaerobic digestion) involving physico-chemical treatment.

The facility also includes other directly associated activities including a physical carbon capture process.

  • proposed operating techniques, including an assessment of best available techniques

  • raw material usage and measures for energy efficiency and avoiding waste production
