The joint Defra and Cefas (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) response sets out in detail specific responses to each recommendation and, where appropriate, the actions Defra and/or Cefas will take to address them.

Defra and Cefas welcomed the independent panel’s report and broadly accepted the panel’s recommendations.  Defra and Cefas will work together to implement their response to the science review to maximise the value of Cefas’s important scientific work.

Defra’s Chief Scientific Adviser commissioned an independent expert science review of Cefas in 2012. This assessment of the relevance, sustainability, quality and impact of the science and scientific programmes at Cefas is part of the Chief Scientific Adviser’s role in ensuring that Defra’s evidence is of a high quality.
