Details

Diphtheria is a rare disease in the UK due to the highly successful routine vaccination programme, with 2 to 11 annual cases reported in England over the past decade.

There has been an increase in cases of toxigenic C. diphtheriae reported among asylum seekers in England during 2022, with similar increase in cases reported in Europe since June 2022.

From March 2024 we will revert to publishing diphtheria case numbers, including cases among asylum seekers, in our annual diphtheria health protection report. All reporting mechanisms are reviewed on an ongoing basis and are subject to change.
