Gareth’s personality and experience are central to his new role
One of the commitments employers can make as a Disability Confident member is to offer a person with disabilities work experience, an apprenticeship, a traineeship or internship.
There are many business benefits of this approach – supporting your local community, finding a pool of hidden talent, and potentially developing your colleagues’ management skills.
One organisation that has benefited from a work experience programme has been RSBi/City Building in Glasgow.
They recruited Gareth Nzelwa as an adult apprentice in joinery. His colleague Lesley Quinn says:
Gareth has brought immense experience to his apprenticeship from his previous job and loves working with his hands. His personality means he is central to any team which will be key in delivering excellent customer services. His contribution is such that you forget he has a disability.
Gareth, who plans to work full-time as a joiner once he’s fully qualified, says:
I feel comfortable at City Building. I’ve bonded with a lot of people here and made many friends. I enjoy working with others.
