Details
This is the government’s latest response to the recommendations made by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2016. It was submitted to the Committee on 30 September 2022.
Background
The government wants disabled people to fulfil their potential and play a full role in society.
As part of this commitment, the UK ratified the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in July 2009 and published its initial report on the rights of disabled people in November 2011.
In 2017 the UK provided information to the UNCRPD as part of its first periodic review of how the UK is implementing the convention.
The Committee then published its report of ‘concluding observations’ in 2017 which included recommendations arising from the periodic review. The Committee also recommended that the UK follow-up on the 10 recommendations issued in the Committee’s 2016 inquiry report until the next periodic review.
The 2016 inquiry was carried out by the UNCRPD under article 6 of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which the UK ratified in 2009.
The government published follow-up responses in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
