The Focus on Enforcement project asks the public to help identify where regulation can be improved, reduced or done differently.

This paper examines the effect of regulation imposed on a representative mix of businesses in the small food manufacturing sector:

  • small breweries
  • cider makers
  • carbonated mineral water producers
  • bakers
  • meat products manufacturers
  • pork butcher
  • cheese makers and confectioners

The report identifies a number of areas where unnecessary burdens have been imposed on business, and provides examples of good practice. In particular it looks at:

  • food hygiene (enforced by District Councils and Unitary Authorities)
  • composition and labelling (enforced by County Councils or Unitary Authorities)
