This prison service instruction (PSI) describes how prisons should work to ensure fair and equal treatment of all prisoners and visitors, by:

  • working to prevent discrimination on the grounds of characteristics such as age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation
  • actively promoting equality
  • investigating and dealing with instances of discrimination when they arise

It includes guidance on legal obligations as well as the requirement for monitoring, reporting and producing equality impact assessments.

This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 14 April 2011 and was last updated on 27 January 2020.
