Environment Agency apprenticeships 2019 to 2020
Updated 28 September 2020
1. Environment Agency target
The Environment Agency is committed to supporting the government’s agenda of creating 3 million apprenticeships by 2020/2021. We have full regard to the target to provide an average of 2.3% new apprentice starts from April 2017 to March 2021.
2. Apprenticeships standards and skills
We are a predominantly technical organisation which have utilised relevant approved apprenticeships for our employees. These support:
- our business needs for technical and general skills
- the development of our people
Our strategic approach is to:
- develop apprenticeships that align to our workforce planning
- explore the development of new apprenticeship standards that support our future skills requirements
- enable us to see a return on our investment, as many apprentices successfully complete their apprenticeship with outstanding results
3. Opportunities for apprenticeships
Our apprenticeship offer is capability led with due regards to the public sector apprenticeship target. We are fully committed to offer meaningful, high quality and suitable apprenticeships.
This year we introduced the Environment Practitioner degree and the Water Environmental Worker apprenticeship, enrolling 70 apprentices during 2019-2020. These will help us deliver our business needs and organisational outcomes.
We continue to assess where apprenticeships can:
- enhance and improve diversity, inclusivity and employee retention
- develop talent and potential
- support our approach to our strategic workforce planning
- enhance and improve our resourcing strategy and resilience
