Environment Agency: application made to abstract water

The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence. The application is for a transfer licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for the transfer of water from the River Aire in Leeds at National Grid Reference (NGR) SE 27326 34212 via a fish pass to NGR SE 27335 34209. The pass will be constructed on the existing Armley Weir and include a Larinier fish pass and a separate Lamprey and Eel pass.

Water will be transferred through the fish pass at the following maximum rates: 3,680 litres per second, 13,248 cubic metres per hour, 317,952 cubic metres per day and 116,052,480 cubic metres per year.

All water will be returned immediately downstream of the weir.

After the 15 May 2019, the Environment Agency will be able to grant a licence authorising the proposal. The licence shall be viewed as granted, unless the Secretary of State, either as a result of any representations made about the proposal or otherwise, instructs or asks for an application to be made to them.
