Published 18 October 2024
Applies to England
Details of the application
The Environment Agency has applied to The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The proposal is to update, repair or replace the 14 radial gates of Benson Weir to continue to maintain water levels for navigation, amenity, environmental and flood protection purposes. The works will include adding a Baffle-Brush type fish and eel pass to the centre of the existing weir structure, which is currently impassable to fish and eel species. The fish pass will be set at the crest height of the existing weir and will be 25 metres long and 4.6 metres wide with a 1:12.5 gradient in two sections: a baffle section 2.4 metres wide containing baffles up to 175 millimetres high, and in the remaining width a brush section containing 500 millimetre high brush blocks with thin, alternating dividing walls to create a ‘switchback’ route. The weir will work and function as normal during the works.
