Details of the application

The Environment Agency has applied to The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for 2 licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for two new impoundment licences to authorise the replacement of the bottom hinged tilting gate with a vertical lift gate at Meadowgate, Sheffield on the River Rother between National Grid References SK 45432 82777and SK 45444 82781 and replacement of the vertical lift sluice gate spanning the River Rother at Canklow, Rotherham between National Grid References SK 43409 89723 and SK 43411 89706.

The works at Canklow will be a like for like replacement of the old regulator currently in-situ on the River Rother. The works at Meadowgate will replace the old regulator with a new vertical regulator gate and associated control equipment in a compound, with crane pad to assist future gate maintenance, and installation of a new fish pass.

Further details of the proposal are: the regulator gates prevent flooding in Rotherham and the surrounding area and require these works to continue to effectively do so. The installation of a fish pass at Meadowgate will remove a blocker to fish migration at this location. The impoundments lie within the Rother Yorks catchment under the Don and Rother Abstraction Licensing Strategy.
