1. Information: Academies Financial Handbook 2017

We’ve published the 2017 edition of the Academies Financial Handbook, which comes into effect on 1 September 2017. We’ve summarised the changes in the 2017 edition on pages 5 and 6.

We’re grateful to members of the academies finance and assurance steering group and its working groups for helping us to develop this edition of the handbook.

2. Information: delivering provision to high needs students aged 19 to 25 in 16 to 19 academies

As a number of sixth-form colleges actively consider converting to become 16 to 19 academies, we have been asked to clarify if the restriction which prevents schools and academies from delivering provision to high needs students (HNS) aged 19 to 25 would apply to those converters.

We can now confirm the restriction will not apply and after conversion recruitment of HNS aged 19 to 25 can continue.

This is because:

  • 16 to 19 academies are neither schools nor within the further education sector
  • 16 to 19 academies have a greater focus on progression into adulthood, the world of work and higher education and so the students are in an environment that is appropriate for this age group

3. Information: year 7 literacy and numeracy catch-up premium - allocations for 2017 to 2018

We’ve updated our year 7 literacy and numeracy catch-up premium: guide for schools to include allocations information for the 2017 to 2018 financial year.

We will make payments to local authorities on 28 February 2018 and to academies on 1 March 2018.

4. Action: 30 hours childcare update

Parents of 3 and 4-year-olds taking up the offer of 30 hours free childcare from September must have a 30 hours code to take to their provider.

Schools with nurseries are encouraged to verify their eligibility codes as soon as possible so parents can have their code checked before taking up their 30 hours place.

You can read the updated 30 hours operational guidance for providers. You can also read the 30 hours early implementation evaluation and a case study pack of good practice.
