The Estates Agent of the Sandringham Estate has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the Sandringham Sands aquifer via two boreholes on the Sandringham Estate, Sandringham, Norfolk. The two boreholes are located at National Grid References (NGRs) TF 70720 27303 and TF 70715 27318
The application is to abstract water as follows from each borehole:
- 27 cubic metres an hour
- 627 cubic metres a day
- 22,610 cubic metres a year
- 7.5 litres per second
The above means the total volumes abstracted will be 54 cubic metres per hour, 1,254 cubic metres per day and 45,220 cubic metres per year.
The abstraction will occur between April and September inclusive in each year.
The water will be used for spray irrigation. The applicant will use the licence to undertake spray irrigation of 33 hectares of potatoes and onions.
The proposal lies within the Babingley catchment and the North West Norfolk Abstraction Licensing Strategy Area.
