In accordance with European Union (EU) legislation, which requires re-notification of all state aids every seven years, the UK transmissible spongiform encephalopathie (TSE) state aids are submitted to the European Commission for re-notification and the submission document is published on GOV.UK.

The EU define state aids as any assistance given by governments to selected parts of a national industry. All assistance provided by UK governments in respect of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) surveillance of cattle, sheep and goats, and in respect of the Compulsory Scrapie Flocks Scheme, is therefore state aid.
