Eye care case study: community Eye Care Pathway

Community Eye Care Pathway
The Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU) has developed a community Eye Care Pathway for people with learning disabilities.
The pathway has been developed in conjunction with SeeAbility and is based on established, successful, learning disability services provided by community optometrists in a number of areas in England. The pathway gives Local Optical Committees and Local Eye Health Networks the basis for a proposal to improve the way eye care for people with learning disabilities is delivered in their local area.
The pathway consists of:
- a longer appointment which can be split into 2 or more visits if needed
- the use of SeeAbility’s Telling the Optometrist About Me and Feedback from my Optometrist
- participating optometrists and dispensing opticians receiving training in providing eye care to people with learning disabilities
The pathway is currently provided in the following areas:
- Greater Manchester
- Cheshire and Merseyside
- Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield and North Durham
- London Borough of Sutton
- London Borough of Barking and Dagenham
- London Borough of Bexley
There are further details about these 6 services on See Ability. There is more information about the pathway on LOCSU.
