Fisherplace Hydro Limited: application made to abstract water and application made to impound water

Details of the application

Fisherplace Hydro Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The applications are for:

  • a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of Stanah Gill at Thirlmere, Cumbria at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 32962 18802.

The impounding works are to facilitate the abstraction of water for Hydroelectric power generation.

  • a full licence to abstract (take) water from Stanah Gill at Thirlmere, Cumbria at NGR NY 32962 18802.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 351 cubic metres an hour

  • 8,424 cubic metres a day

  • 1,853,280 cubic metres a year

  • between 01 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

The water will be returned to Fisherplace Gill at NGR NY 31958 18312.

The proposal includes the provision of a minimum prescribed flow to protect the ecology within the depleted river channel. The intake will include a 1 millimetre Coanda type fish screen.
