To ensure a cost-effective, secure and net zero energy system, we need significant levels of flexibility from technologies such as electricity storage, smart charging of electric vehicles and flexible heating systems.
These technologies need to be able to access markets easily and be rewarded for the services they can provide to the energy system, including shifting the consumption or generation of energy in time or location to balance supply and demand.
This competition of up to £2.6 million looks for innovative ideas on technical solutions which could help standardize and coordinate flexibility markets, making it easier to buy and sell flexibility and creating a more diverse and competitive marketplace.
Unlocking flexibility – both in domestic and non-domestic sectors – represents a huge opportunity to make better use of our homegrown renewable electricity, reduce our dependence on gas and lower consumer bills.
