Flexible Service case study: Squadron Leader Tom Goble

00:02 – 00:06

My name is Tom Goble. I’m a Flight Lieutenant and I’m currently the

00:06 – 00:11

SO3 Combat Air for the A6 Air Programme’s Office.

00:11 – 00:14

I applied for a 20 percent reduction in my working hours.

00:14 – 00:17

I’d always kind of fancied myself as a bit of a musician to be honest but I

00:17 – 00:20

never knew how I compared to the guys who did it for a living rather than

00:20 – 00:24

the guys I met in the Air Force who kind of just did it for fun. I felt like I was just missing

00:24 – 00:27

that aspect of my life and I wasn’t really finding a good balance between

00:27 – 00:31

being in the Air Force and still finding the time to get out and prep for gigs

00:31 – 00:36

And go to gigs. So it was when a friend of mine introduced me to the idea of

00:36 – 00:39

Flexible Service where you could actually, you know, almost buy back a bit of that

00:39 – 00:45

time. So that’s why I took it. I went to see my one-up and my two-up and just sort of

00:45 – 00:52

explain what I wanted to do. They were massively supportive and yeah it just kind of went to.

00:52 – 00:56

So, with modern times now, our flexible working is really important because people expect more

00:56 – 1:04

flexibility. If it’s even for childcare or travel or a bit like Tom doing another interest like music.

1:04 – 1:07

Me and Tom worked together you know looking at what work we had

01:07 – 1:10

what meetings were coming up but we’re always prioritising anyway.

01:10 – 1:15

We just try and plan a bit further ahead for which days he was going to have off.

01:15 – 1:19

I feel like the RAF has that modern way of working that I can

01:19 – 1:22

use to my benefit, so they get more back from me in the time I am here.

01:22 – 1:26

It’s been a great balance keeping that regular income

01:26 – 1:30

and also to have the music aspect as well, you know getting that day a week

01:30 – 1:35

just to, like I say, just to prep for those gigs and sort my admin out or do any studio

01:35 – 1:39

Work stuff like that. It’s been a really good balance. For me it’s just been great.
