The Environment Agency manages the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) register in England and Wales.

We are the data controller for this service. A data controller determines how and why personal information is processed.

Our personal information charter explains:

  • your rights
  • what we do with your personal information

We are allowed to process your personal information because we have official authority as the environmental regulator.

We need personal information from you so that we can register your equipment and deregister it after disposal.

We process your personal information to carry out a task in the public interest that is set out in law.

What we do with your personal information

We use your personal information to make sure the PCB database for England and Wales is accurate and up to date, as required by the regulations.

We do not use your personal information to make an automated decision or for automated profiling.

We may share your personal information with:

  • Natural Resources Wales
  • Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs
  • Shared Services Connected Ltd (SSCL) – they process your payment information

We will not share or disclose your personal information to any other party without your consent unless we are lawfully able to do so.

The PCB register is a public register. It identifies the holder and their equipment details, as submitted in your registration. If you want your details kept confidential, see the ‘Disclosure’ section in the application form. For example, if disclosing the location or identity of your equipment may risk national security.

We will consider the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 when we answer requests for information from the public register.

How long we keep your personal information

We keep your personal information for 6 years from your last submission. This is our standard information retention policy.

Where your personal information is stored and processed

The Environment Agency and SSCL store and process your personal information on servers in the UK.
