Accredited official statistics status
Accredited official statistics status means that our statistics meet the highest standards of trustworthiness, quality and public value, and it is our responsibility to maintain compliance with these standards.
The designation of free flow speed statistics as accredited official statistics was confirmed in February 2013 following a full assessment against the Code of Practice for Statistics by the Office for Statistics Regulation.
Changes to these statistics
Since the latest review by the Office for Statistics Regulation, we have continued to comply with the Code of Practice for Statistics, and have improved these statistics by:
- reviewing the counting sites used in the publication and as a result constructed a revised data series for 2011 onwards which was first published in the 2015 edition of the report
- including more contextual commentary in the annual release by including data from the RAC Foundation, Ministry of Justice, the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme and Home Office
- adding further analyses including headway between vehicles and differences between weekends and weekdays
- including additional vehicle and road classes
To better reflect the content following these changes, the series was renamed from ‘Free flow speed statistics’ to ‘Speed compliance statistics’ with the 2016 edition.
