This competition opened on 30 January 2017 and is now closed for registrations.

Innovate UK is to invest up to £1.5 million in precision medicine projects that develop affordable gene-based diagnostics for non-communicable diseases and child health. These must be targeted specifically at the South African population.

The aim of this competition is to encourage innovative partnerships between the UK and South Africa. Innovate UK and the South African Medical Research Council are funding this competition, administered by the Newton Fund.

Projects should put forward precision medicine solutions addressing one or more of the following challenges:

• diabetes
• cardiovascular disease
• cancer
• child mortality

We expect projects to range in size from total costs of £300,000 to £500,000. Projects should last up to 36 months.

If you are a UK business, you can carry out the project as the only UK partner or you can work with others. The project lead on the UK-side must be a business. However, at least one partner must be a South African research organisation or business.

You must register before midday on 10 May 2017.

You must apply before midday on 17 May 2017.
