Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF): Stage 1a evaluation

Stage 1a of a long term evaluation of the GCRF consists of a management review, and findings on aspects of the international research it funds.

The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) supports UK and international researchers and innovators in taking on key issues affecting developing countries through:

  • challenge-led multidisciplinary research
  • strengthening capability for research, innovation and knowledge exchange
  • providing an agile response to emergencies

GCRF is part of the UK’s official development assistance (ODA).

Two reports summarise the evidence collected on the first phase of a 5 year evaluation programme of the GCRF. These reports are based on evidence mainly collected in 2020.

The GCRF Review of Management Processes examines the evidence on management, and covers:

  • strategy
  • processes
  • monitoring, evaluation and learning
  • value for money

The Synthesis Report on Relevance, Fairness, Gender, Poverty and Social Inclusion assesses the evidence on these dimensions of international research funded through the GCRF.
