The Government welcomes the Office for Environmental Protection’s (OEP) report on the Implementation of the Water Framework Directive Regulations and River Basin Management Planning (published 9 May 2024). This is an important area for the OEP’s monitoring work and the new Government is continuing to consider the conclusions and recommendations in the report, which will be part of the Government’s considerations for reform on water in the coming weeks and months. The Government notes the OEP’s findings at this time and will provide a more detailed response in September.

Section 29 of the Environment Act requires the Secretary of State to lay in Parliament a response to the OEP’s report within three months. The deadline for laying this response falls during summer recess and an earlier opportunity to lay was not possible due to the calling of the General Election and subsequent prorogation. The Government, therefore, respectfully asks the House to accept this response before it rises in July with the intention to lay a full, considered response as soon as possible when the House returns.
