Exemptions from the Green Gas Levy (GGL): approved biomethane certification schemes

Updated 20 December 2024

Applies to England, Scotland and Wales

The Green Gas Levy (GGL) applies to all licensed fossil fuel gas suppliers.

There is an exemption for gas suppliers that can evidence that they have provided at least 95% biomethane using green gas certificates from a recognised certification scheme.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has a regulatory duty under Regulation 38(14) of the Green Gas Support Scheme Regulations 2021 to approve and publish the name of at least one biomethane certification scheme for the purposes of this exemption, and the date the schemes are approved from.

The following biomethane certification scheme is approved for the purposes of the Green Gas Levy exemption mechanism:

  • the Green Gas Certification Scheme, run by Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd
